Dr. Caligari Study Guide Questions
1. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a story about 2 men named Dr. Caligari and Cesare. These 2 main characters travel around different towns with the twist that Cesare can predict the future. Cesare predicts a murder and the next day it happens. Dr. Caligari and Cesare get accused of the murder because Cesare spoke it into existence. Francis then tries to solve the case of his friend who died.
2. The film tells its story by making flashbacks throughout the whole movie. When Francis is telling his story it goes from the flashbacks to the present in real time.
3. The film uses its lighting to get the better picture out of the movie. I feel like in many movies the lighting gets darker to get more suspense. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari does a great job of incorporating the darker lighting to give off more suspense as Francis tries to solve the case.
4. The plot twist was crazy to me and I simply could not believe it. Francis was in an asylum inmate and it was all in his mind. None of the story happened, it was all a dream basically.
5. The plot twist makes the audience really have to do a double take and rethink the whole movie. I remember when I watched Us by Jordan Peele and the plot twist at the end of the movie had my brain in a pretzel. I was rethinking the whole movie and trying to figure out everything.
6. The set designs show the time the movie was mad. You can see the sets do not look the best and show how movies used to be made back then. They kind of remind me like plays but the camera angles and lighting make it 10 times better.
7. The set is fitting for the movie in my opinion. The feeling around the movie was suspense and horror with the set fitting into those 2.
8. It is crazy to think that this movie is from 100 years ago and how much movies have changed. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was one of the first and biggest horror movies from the 1920s, beating the case of time. The director did a great job with everything it was given and made a great movie with different movie aspects.
9. I am not the biggest movie person so I do not have the biggest range of movies. I would probably say Shutter Island due to the similarity in twists at the end.
10. The question that came to my mind was if the things in the movie happened or not? Whenever you have a movie where you finish the movie and start asking questions, it is a great movie. The interpretation of the movie is the only thing left with you, you and your neighbor Jeffrey could have 2 different interpretations of the movie.
